Celebrating 20 Years of Health Research Excellence in Saskatchewan


The Santé Awards, an annual event hosted by SHRF, celebrate Saskatchewan researcher's outstanding achievements in health research.


This occasion serves as an opportunity to:

  • Acknowledge researchers for their significant contributions to cultivating a vibrant health research and innovation culture.

  • Cultivate and reinforce connections with the research community, our partners, and other provincial supporters.


Our Santé Awards were presented at an in-person networking event on Thursday, January 25th, 2024, at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Saskatoon East.


We announced three different awards during this year's 2023-24 event.

EXCELLENCE AWARDS


These awards recognize the top-ranked applications from researchers and teams in the past year’s funding competitions. All applications to SHRF’s funding competitions are ranked according to our rigorous peer review process by committees of active researchers and health professionals.

IMPACT AWARD

SHRF also announced the recipient of the Impact Award. This award was presented to a researcher who received a SHRF Establishment Grant in 2018-19, has submitted their 5-year follow-up report, and is currently active in Saskatchewan. The award recognizes their work, which helps build capacity, advance knowledge, inform decision-making, provides health, economic and social impacts, and shows future potential to continue their impact in Saskatchewan.


Dr. Robert Laprairie

University of Saskatchewan

College of Pharmacy and Nutrition


Dr. Robert Laprairie was recognized for his work in the Modulation of the endocannabinoid system in the GAERS rat model of absence epilepsy.


Dr. Robert Laprairie's impactful research work is recognized for: 

  • Research to develop cannabinoid treatments for absence epilepsy 

  • Multiple collaborators on the project  

  • Additional leveraged funding from other Canadian funding agencies  

  • 12 knowledge mobilization activities  

  • And the William A. Devane Young Investigator Award from the International Cannabinoid Research Society  

ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Our Achievement Award is presented to one senior researcher currently residing in Saskatchewan, whose exemplary career achievements have been inspired by their drive, leadership and ingenuity. It recognizes the recipient's work over their career to build capacity, advance knowledge, inform decision-making, and provide health, economic, and social impacts in Saskatchewan.


Dr. Hassan Vatanparast

Dr. Hassan Vatanparast is recognized for his impactful work in:

  • Nutritional Epidemiology Studies Using Complex National Health Survey Data  

  • Bone Health Research Studies  

  • Eat Healthy Play Healthy (EHPH) Initiative  

  • Research on Vitamin D 

  • Research on migration health 

  • Healthy Start – Depart Santé (HSDS) 

  • Project LINK (Linking Immigrants to Nutritional Knowledge) 

  • Promoting healthy living and diabetes prevention with Indigenous Communities 

  • Community engagement and knowledge sharing  

  • Training highly qualified people 

  • Building a culture of health research 

  • And lastly, forming international partnerships and collaborations
